Truck hauling ‘aggressive’ lab monkeys carrying Herpes and Hep-C overturns in Mississippi

A truck carrying over 30 Rhesus monkeys flipped over on a Mississippi highway Tuesday morning, sparking confusion, fear, and heartbreak.

The accident happened on I-59 near Heidelberg. The monkeys were being transported from Tulane University to a research lab in Florida.

After the crash, the truck driver told officers the monkeys were dangerous and could harm humans. Even though Tulane University later confirmed that the monkeys were not infectious, law enforcement took extreme action.

Several monkeys were killed on the spot, with officials claiming it was done for public safety.

Chaos in the Aftermath: Some Monkeys Still Missing

As of Tuesday night, officials reported:

  • 15 monkeys dead
  • 13 captured safely
  • 3 still running loose in the area

Local and state wildlife teams joined the search to find the remaining monkeys. Authorities are urging anyone who sees a monkey to stay back and call for help immediately.

Tulane’s Statement: Monkeys Were Safe, Not Sick

In a public statement, Tulane University said the monkeys were not sick or infectious and were being used for research that helps advance science.
