Wedding dances can be sweet, but they don’t usually go viral. That changed in October when Mikayla and Cody Phillips surprised their Utah guests with a father-daughter dance so unforgettable, the video has soared past 41 million views on YouTube.
Mikayla, 25, is a trained dancer who met Cody while performing with the International Folk Dance Ensemble at Brigham Young University. Their love story felt meant to be—but nothing prepared their 400 wedding guests for the moment Mikayla teamed up with her dad, Nathan Ellison, to flip tradition upside down.
A Trick Start That Fooled Everyone
The pair stepped onto the dance floor swaying gently to the classic slow song “Butterfly Kisses.” It looked like any other father-daughter moment—until the music scratched like a DJ remix and blasted into “U Can’t Touch This.”
The crowd exploded. Mikayla and Nathan threw on matching sunglasses and launched into sharp disco steps that had everyone screaming with laughter.
Hit After Hit, Move After Move
Their “running man” was perfectly in sync, but the real chaos started when “Apache (Jump On It)” kicked in. Nathan’s goofy cowboy moves nearly stole the spotlight from his dancer daughter. Then came the wild energy of “Party Rock Anthem,” with big arm swings and street-style choreography.
Just when guests thought the routine had peaked, the duo slid into a glittery disco-ballroom mash-up set to “Shake Your Groove Thing.” And they still weren’t done.
Bollywood, Tom Jones, and One Very Committed Dad
The routine jumped across genres—Bollywood sequences, over-the-top Tom Jones lip-syncing, and even a dramatic drop into the beat of “Dessert” by Dawin. At one point, Mikayla’s veil slipped off, but she didn’t miss a single step.
The biggest surprise, though? Nathan danced like he’d been training for years.
The Meaning Behind the Magic
Mikayla later explained to ABC News that while she grew up dancing, her dad definitely didn’t—he works in sales. Still, they pulled off the entire routine with only one week of practice. Each night before the wedding, they rehearsed the mash-up Cody created from the songs they loved most.
For Nathan, the dance meant even more. Mikayla is his oldest—and his only—daughter. He’d talked for years about wanting a father-daughter dance that felt special. This was his chance.
And by the end of the night, it was clear he got exactly what he hoped for. The dance floor wasn’t just the center of the wedding—it became the center of the internet.
